1st XI Captain's Report 2009
Three wins, 4 draws and 10 losses was an accurate summary of the team’s performance during 2009.
Impressive early victories against Kempton and Long Ditton saw the team start well but the
next victory had to wait until August and came with a comprehensive 7 wicket victory against
Frimley. The four draws were a mixture of frustration of not being able to take the 10th wicket
against Effingham and Byfleet whilst impressive character was shown to avoid defeat against West
End and Horley.
The defeats could be mainly attributed to not scoring enough runs but also fine individual
batting performances against WVCC.
On the batting front Seb Hall lead the way with 358 runs, the highlights being an 89 against
Effingham. Garry Foreman (280runs), Dan Fenton (276 runs) and John Hall (241 runs) were the
other players to score over 200 runs. Whilst there is plenty of room for improvement, seven fifties
from five players was a major improvement. Dan Fenton hit a fine 50 in the cup as well as sharing
a big partnership with John Hall against Godalming, both scoring 50’s. Woo Powe1l’s 55* against
Old Pauline will see him pushing for a higher batting position early next season and the same can
be said of Luke Bentley who’s highlight was a 55* against West End to save the game. Youngster,
Sam Buckell also had a very good first season and will no doubt be a fixture in the side for years
to come. Other good performances by Nick Fenwick, Ross Goodwin, Nick Williams and Scott
Baker shows the strength in depth and competition for places next year should be heightened.
Jonathon Powell lead the wickets with 31 including a five wicket haul against Horley although
his most impressive performance coming against Frimley to help gain a vital victory. Woo Powell
(26 wickets) again bowled very well, with a fine 5-12 for against Battersea. Luke Bentley (24
wickets) bowled well and a 6-7l being a highlight. Scott Baker (22 wickets) was a great addition
to the side after a couple of years out. His bowling improved as the season went on and more wickets
should be due in 2010. Garry Foreman 21 also produced some good performances with the highlight
being 4-50 at Hampton Wick. Other performances to note were Ali Booth’s 4-26 against Frimley
which was vital to secure safety and it was also promising to see Stuan Baldwin and Salik Awan
bowl well when called upon.
The squad was much stronger in 2009, and with a few new players settling in the club expects
to improve next season.
A big thank you goes to George Balchin for all his umpiring efforts and Maureen Fenton for
continuing to score admirably.
